"The
Holloman Air & Space Expo"
Oct
27th - 28th
History will be made at
Holloman Air Force Base this October when the Air Force teams up with
the non-profit X Prize Foundation for the first ever live fly air and
space show.
“The Holloman Air & Space Expo will
combine elements of a conventional military open house with the
innovative competitors of the Wirefly XPrize Cup,” said Lt. Col. Angelo
Eiland, event coordinator.
According to Brigadier Gen. David
Goldfein, Commander, 49th Fighter Wing, the three day event
will give school children in the region the opportunity to talk with
scientists, engineers, NASA astronauts and Airmen who have recently
returned from combat operations.
“We are going to have a three-day event,
with the first day totally reserved for kids. We expect up to
12-thousand school children from across the state of New Mexico to come
to Holloman to hear their stories,” said General Goldfein. “We hope to
fire them up about their opportunity to serve, or to get involved in
science and technology.”
Following the special day for school
children Holloman will open its gates to the public on Oct 27-28. “It will be a two-day air and space show
like never tried before,” said General Goldfein. “We are going to have flying
demonstrations and static displays of all the aircraft in the Air Force
inventory and we will showcase Air Force Special Operations Command
which is coming to Cannon Air Force Base with CV-22s on Oct. 1.All of
this will be intermixed with the commercial space companies competing in
the XPrize competition,” said General Goldfein.
According to Lt. Col. Eiland, the XPrize
Cup portion of the event will feature ground displays, exhibits, and a
lunar lander competition with a $2 million prize.
Among the military aircraft making an
appearance will be the F-117A Nighthawk, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting
Falcon, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, QF-4 Phantom II, CV-22 Osprey, the
German Air Force Tornado and, for the first time in the Tularosa Basin,
the F-22A Raptor.
It’s appropriate that the Holloman Air &
Space Expo falls on the Air Force 60th anniversary year and
the 50th anniversary of manned space flight, said Lt. Col.
Eiland. “This event will also signify the end of an era with what will
be the last Holloman open house with the F-117, and the beginning of a
new era with the first here for the F-22.”
