White
Sands Missile Range Museum
Less then an
hour away from Ruidoso lies White sands Missile Range, where two of the greatest events of the
20th century were born, the Atomic
Age and the Space Age.
At the White Sands Missile Range
Museum you can trace the origin of America's
missile and space activity, find out how the atomic age
began and learn about the accomplishments of scientists like
Dr. Wernher von Braun and Dr. Clyde Tombaugh.
Outside the
museum is a Missile
Park displaying a variety of missiles and rockets
tested at White Sands. These include everything from the WAC
Corporal and Loon (U.S. version of the V-1) to a Pershing II
and Patriot. More than 50 items are on display.

At
the museum you will also find displays about prehistoric cultures and the rip-roaring Old
West which are an important part of the history of southern New Mexico. The museum also has a
gift shop with items from local artists and a variety of
goods featuring the Missile Range logo and other aspects of
White Sands.
The Museum is open
year-round. Hours on weekdays are 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Holidays. The
missile park is open everyday from sunrise to sunset. There is
no fee for either the museum or Park.
To get to the museum,
take US-70 from Ruidoso to Alamogordo. From the
intersection of US-70, US-54, US-82 on White
Sands Blvd in Alamogordo, go Southwest on US-70,
US-82 approximately 44 miles. Watch for the
brown "Museum - Missile
Park" sign
and exit to the right. Proceed around and
through the underpass. Go approximately 4 miles
to the Main Gate at White Sands Missile Range.
To enter the White Sands Missile Range
you will need to show your
drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof of
insurance. As you approach the Missile Range Main
Gate, you must stop at the visitors center on the right just
before the gate. Park in the parking lot and proceed inside
the visitors center where you will show your license,
registration, and proof of insurance. You will be given a
red placard to display in your vehicle. Return to your
automobile and proceed to the visitor entrance gate, where
security personnel will perform checks and allow you to pass
through the gate. You may then proceed approximately 75
yards and turn left into the museum/missile park parking
lot.
