The Toy
Train Depot and Museum
Remember the days when every village park or drive
in movie theater had a park ride train? Remember
the days when every Christmas tree had a Lionel
train under the tree. Yes, those were the days of
yesteryear and you can now relive them yourself,
children, and grandchildren at the
Toy
Train Depot and Museum,
less then an hour drive from Ruidoso.
Toy Train Depot
is
two attractions in one. First
there is a 15 minuet ride
in one of four
Park Ride Trains
over two miles of 16 inch gauge track through historic
Alameda Park. These trains weighs
over 2 tons and can haul 48 children or 24 adults
in three passenger cars. These
trains were very popular at zoos, parks and even
movie theaters in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
You will laugh and be able to relive childhood memories
while riding around, listening to the
"Choo-Choo"
sound of the train.
In
addition
a
very special treat awaits children.
The Depot has a very rare 12" gauge
F7 diesel locomotive which is very simple to drive
and thus children are allowed to operate and drive
the train themselves, unassisted.
The other
attraction consist of the Museum which contains
five large rooms containing model train
layouts. All the layouts are operational and
you are allowed to operate all the model trains
and control their starting and stopping. The walls
are lined with display cases containing historical
model train locomotives and cars of all gauge scales.
Also on display are train related toys, photographs
and train memorabilia.
The museum contains over eight thousand pieces of
railroad memorabilia and ten operating model railroads
from Z to G scale, including the largest HO
layout in the Southwest.
Some of the train layouts have as much as a quarter
of a mile of tracks, as well as models of towns,
and mountains. The museum
contains a dispatchers desk with a manual
typewriter, hand and foot telegraph keys, and sounder.
The museum is housed in an authentic Train Depot,
which was built in 1898.
The Toy Train Depot museum is
open from noon to 5pm Wednesday through Sunday only.
(last tickets for the guided tour sold at 4pm).
The
ALAMOGORDO/ALAMEDA PARK NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY
runs
on 16" track Wednesday through Sunday only
from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.
Admission to the museum is $4.00 for adults,
$3.00 for children, and $3 for a ride on the miniature
train. Reduced price combo museum/train ride
packages are available for adults. To get to the
